Antoinette prayed with heart and mind
how to please the Lord. A voice replied,
Forsake all earthly things and put aside
thyself and go. Leave everything behind.
But what could she have owned? A brush, a comb,
a piece of colored ribbon for her hair,
some cloth to sew into a blouse to wear
to church? The night she ran away from home
she took a penny for tomorrow’s bread.
With no bindle on a stick, and free
to walk the road, she was determined she
Would heed the voice, would follow where it lead.
No sooner gone, she heard that same voice say,
Where is thy faith? In a penny? so she threw it away.
