By Jane Blanchard

How they seize us!
Suddenly,
insistently,
obsessively,
they grip
our minds
or bodies
(or both)
and don’t let go
until we cry
“Uncle,”
much like
the Hebrews hollered
“Moses.”
Indulging our cravings
seldom results
in satisfying ourselves.
Usually, we are
profoundly disappointed
in our preference
for meat over manna.
Resistance,
even victory,
comes only
by surrendering
our wants,
our wills,
to One
who delivers us
from bondage
each and every day.
