to Frederick Buechner

By Elizabeth Swann

Lover of rain,
pearl skies, black
streets like rivers,
the neighborhood
taking shelter, and you,
snug with a book
in your room,
a silver curtain drawn
around the house, hidden
in a slick drip
of leaves –
you discover
joy in the damp
smell of grass,
wet dogs’ fur,
in the shhh and patter
on glass, on slant roofs, toys
left on the lawn –
a rinsing
of the weary world.

  4. Hi Elizaabeth, my first time here and it’s a pleasure – what a yearning spirit and yet what a steady and well crafted poetic voice you have. This piece I think my favourite – tenderly visceral and lovely work… All the Best to you Scott http://www.scotthastie.com
