Dear law-abiding child,
Take the straight, narrow way
On the highway-lined paint
Of the yellow chair;*

Don the sparked halo
Of metal, ringed and wired,
Circled in gallowed light.

Ride the hallowed lightning
Like God’s hanged presence,
Lowly one of the electric chair.

Lose your own
Worldly self,
And win
A crown.

*a modern cross — Alabama’s electric chair
